Mudgee Arts Precinct are inviting children aged 9–12 who are experiencing mild anxiety and their parents/caregivers, to take part in a calming and engaging eight-week art program at Mudgee Arts Precinct.

Engagement with the arts can help young people connect to their feelings, thoughts and imagination. It can build self-confidence and resilience, foster social connections and improve mental health and wellbeing.

This free program will provide a safe, structured space for young people and their parents/carers to engage with and respond creatively to curated artworks in a small group setting.

Led by Artist/Educator Michael Bourke, the program will be held over eight consecutive Saturdays starting Saturday 10 May 2025 between 10am and 12pm. A program for the children’s parents and caregivers will also run at the same time. All art materials, resources and morning tea will be provided.

Culture Dose for Kids is a program that was developed by the Art Gallery of NSW in collaboration with the Black Dog Institute and is funded by Wollar Solar Farms.

What's involved?

Questionnaires

Complete a questionnaire about anxiety at the first and last sessions, and three months later. Also, evaluate your experience of the program through a survey at the last session.

Enjoy the arts

Visit Mudgee Arts Precinct each week for a 2-hour workshop over 8 weeks.
Program delivery will be from Saturday 10 May 2025 through to Saturday 28 June 2025.

A parent or caregiver must accompany each student to the sessions and will also be involved in the program.

If you provide consent, our team would also like the opportunity to photograph any artworks produced (with no identifiable links to participants).

Who can participate?

Young people (with their parent/carer) will be eligible to participate if they:

  • Are between the ages of 9 to 12 years of age
  • Are able to travel to Mudgee Arts Precinct
  • You (the parent or caregiver) believe your child experiences mild anxiety*

*Anxiety itself is a normal emotion. However, some young people worry more than others, either through a greater number of worries or more frequent or intense worries. For research purposes in this project, mild anxiety refers to children who worry a little more than their peers but have not been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

Participants of Culture Dose for Kids 2024 are invited to apply however priority will be given to new participants.
