The Indivisible: New Paintings by Kandos artists Gabrielle Bates, Leo Cremonese and Georgina Pollard

In physics, matter divides into decreasing particles until it can no longer be divided. Is this indivisible point the ultimate structure of existence? The artists in this exhibition use the process of painting as a direct means to form a spiritual connection to The Indivisible. Rhythm, pattern, energy, ritual and connection-to-place are essential methods used by the artists to engage with the energy and life of their materials, inviting them to become active collaborators in the process of creation.

Gabrielle Bates

Gabrielle Bates is an interdisciplinary artist with over 30 years of experience. Building on her extensive knowledge of painting, she applies particle physics, pattern and emergence theories to various artistic platforms, as she is fascinated by how things, especially those deemed mute or worthless, relate to each other. Numerous governing bodies in Sydney have commissioned Gabrielle’s work for festivals, exhibitions and residencies, and her paintings, photos, and assemblages have been selected for Australian award exhibitions including the Bowness Photography Prize (2021), Linden Postcard prize (2019), Fishers Ghost Prize (2019, 2023), Blacktown Art Prize (2018), Tim Olsen Drawing Prize (2018), and Portia Geach Prize for Portraiture (2006). Gabrielle’s work has appeared in university and regional galleries, curated group exhibitions, a cement factory, a coal loader, a pavilion, forests, even a sports field, and to date, she has had 13 solo exhibitions. In 2022, Gabrielle relocated from Gadigal land in Sydney to live and work on Dabee Wiradjuri land in Kandos, regional New South Wales, Australia.

Georgina Pollard

Alongside a socially engaged practice, Georgina Pollard is an abstract painter. Through a direct relationship with process and materials painting is, for her, a practice that pushes towards what is unrecognisable in ourselves.

Georgina Pollard has had 5 solo shows in the Inner West of Sydney at A-M Gallery and ATVP as well as a solo show in the Central West at Western Plains Cultural Centre. Group exhibitions of note have been at Carriageworks, Artbank, SNO, Articulate, Factory 49 and Bathurst Regional Art Gallery. She has been selected for many art prizes including Fishers Ghost and The Calleen (Cowra). She won the Marrickville Contemporary Art prize 2011 and participated as a member of KSCA winning work in the Northern Beaches Art and Design Prize (2021) and received highly commended at the Calleen (2014) and the Northern Beaches Art and Design Prize (2023).

Georgina Pollard has been a member of At the Vanishing Point Gallery (Newtown), ArtCycle and Kandos School of Cultural Adaptation and was a co-founder of INDEX artspace (St Peters), Wayout (Kandos) and Cementa Contemporary arts festival (Kandos).

Born on Dharug land, she now lives and works on Dabee Wiradjuri land in Kandos, regional New South Wales, Australia.

Leo Cremonese

Leo is a committed student and practitioner of Advita Vedanta, his artistic practice is one of deep meditation and prakria (process), with a focus on the most fundamental levels of the kurukshetra (the field of play, or perceptible existence). His aim is to maintain a sharp awareness of Kurukshetra’s oneness with – yet simultaneous difference from - Sat Cit (the imperceptible, indivisible whole).

Leo’s prakria is a fusion of abstract painting, deep listening and dance in a process of active meditation. His paintings are a result of this spiritual practice.

Leo has a Master’s degree from COFA (1996). He completed a three-year historical oil painting technique course (2004) and a drawing practice course (2005) at the Charlie Sheard Studio School. Charlie’s courses were undertaken on a scholarship granted by Tim Olsen Gallery and were fundamental to his development as a painter, giving him true mastery and understanding of the medium.

Leo has held over 15 solo shows including at the Western Plains Cultural Centre (2020), Bondi Pavilion Gallery (2011), Iain Dawson Gallery (2009), La Trobe University Gallery (2003), First Draft Gallery (1999). Curated group exhibitions include shows at BRAG (2023), and Cementa (2019). Leo was a finalist at the Genny Birt Award (1996) and the Blake Prize for Spiritual Art (2009). Leo has numerous works in private collections in Australia, Italy, Germany, Spain, USA and Brazil.

Leo Cremonese lives in Kandos, (Dabee Wiradjuri country).
