Mudgee Arts Precinct has partnered with Australian Galleries to produce an exhibition about life on the farm – something that will be familiar to many of our local visitors. The exhibition features works by artists who have explored their own farming life, including one of Australia’s foremost landscape artists, William Robinson. Robinson’s artworks are particularly joyful in their exploration of the unpredictable, hectic facets of farm life dominated by self-portraits with curious cows and chaotic chickens.
Other artists include Rosalind Atkins, Jenny Bell, Philip Davey, Kit Hiller, Nick Howson, Janet Luxton and Jimmy Rix.
William Robinson Biography
William Robinson, a figurative expressionist painter, is celebrated as one of Australia’s leading artists. Renowned for his distinctive interpretation of the Australian landscape, he is equally admired for his whimsical portraits and narrative scenes. Born in Queensland in 1936, Robinson began his artistic journey in the 1960s. His expansive, intricate depictions of the Australian bush, characterised by their unique, skewed perspectives, are among the country’s most iconic landscape images. His imaginative and humorous self-portraits earned him the prestigious Archibald Prize in 1987 and 1995. A significant retrospective of his work was presented at the Queensland Art Gallery in 2001, coinciding with the publication of a comprehensive monograph on his art. In 2009, the William Robinson Gallery was established at the QUT campus in Old Government House, dedicated to showcasing his remarkable legacy.
